Lisbon, Portugal– On July 10th, NILG.AI proudly presented its urban mobility solution, SafeJourney, at VOXPOP Demo Day. The event showcased innovative projects aimed at transforming urban mobility.

NILG.AI’s CEO Kelwin Fernandes and Pedro Serrano, data scientist at NILG.AI were present at the event, where they had the opportunity to present SafeJourney, an AI solution to empower wheelchair users, to community members, investors, and other stakeholders.

The Challenge: A Barrier-Free Path for Wheelchair Users

There are over 65 million wheelchair users worldwide, and 15% of the population faces some form of disability. Furthermore, every single one of us will likely encounter mobility challenges at some point in our lives.

For millions of wheelchair users worldwide, accessing public spaces can be a daunting task. The lack of up-to-date information on the accessibility of public areas forces them to plan their routes carefully in advance. Unfortunately, this often leads to risky decisions, such as navigating roads to bypass obstacles on sidewalks or crosswalks.

SafeJourney: Empowering Wheelchair Users with AI

SafeJourney uses Deep Learning trained with satellite, street, and geographical data to calculate an accessibility index for wheelchair users.  This index is based on various factors, including sidewalk irregularity, crosswalk width, presence of ramps, and slope gradients, among others. By analyzing thousands of data points in Lisbon, SafeJourney provides valuable insights into wheelchair-friendly regions, enabling users to make informed mobility decisions.

A Vision for a More Inclusive Future

We see SafeJourney as a great asset not only for individual users to plan their trips but also for Real estate listing companies, travel comparison platforms, and job-searching platforms, enabling wheelchair users to make informed decisions that will impact every aspect of their day-to-day life. 

A Journey Towards a Standard Mobility Score

With ambitious plans on the horizon, NILG.AI is preparing to pilot SafeJourney throughout Europe. We aim to garner early validation from industry stakeholders, positioning SafeJourney as the go-to standard mobility score for disabled individuals across the continent.

Speaking about the project, Kelwin Fernandes emphasized,

We want to make our index THE standard mobility score for disabled people… Providing an Accessibility Index to each door in the world.

We believe that by making this index the standard, we can encourage institutions and businesses to make efforts to improve their own score, translating into organic improvements across the cities, turning them more accessible.

About VOXPOP

European project for digital innovation of the urban mobility system of the city of  Lisbon. VoxPop aims to create mobility solutions that meet the needs of those who live, study, or work in, or simply visit, Lisbon, seeking to respond to a set of non-technological challenges of digital innovation.

The ambition is to accelerate the digital transition of the city’s mobility system with the development of a more collaborative model of city management, supported by digital tools that allow more efficient planning, operation, and maintenance of the transport infrastructure and, simultaneously, the creation of mobility solutions more focused on the people who actually use these solutions.
